SUNY Student Athletes on Charitable Leaf-Raking Rampage

November 12, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

GENESEO – The SUNY Geneseo Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) went on its annual community leaf-raking spree this past Sunday, tidying lawns and sprucing up leaf piles as the last of the leaves are falling from the branches.

Over 350 members of the SUNY Geneseo Athletic Department members took part in this event, armed with rakes, tarps and a passion for community. According to SUNY Geneseo Athletics Director Mike Mooney, the program is an example of Geneseo’s high standards when it comes to student athletics.

“Our leaf raking event is one of the many opportunities our student-athletes have to give back to the Geneseo Community,” said Mooney. “Doing our best in the classroom, on the field and in the community are all important aspects of what it takes to be a well-rounded student-athlete at Geneseo.”

SAAC is comprised of Student-Athletes, and has members from each sports team that SUNY Geneseo hosts. Their bi-monthly meetings serve as a gateway for communication between athletes, coaches and directors.

SAAC will be hosting more events aimed at promoting growth in the classroom and on the field. Their next event will be the Veterans Recognition half-time ceremony at the basketball game on Tuesday, November 18, at the SUNY Geneseo basketball opener against Medaille.

Daemen S.A.A.C. Holds Annual Fall Food Drive

November 11, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

AMHERST, N.Y. – Last week, the Daemen College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held their annual food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York. In its third year, the campus-wide event has raised over 600 pounds of non-perishable food items to benefit over 300 member organizations who help feed the less fortunate in Erie and surrounding county communities.

The Daemen SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of Daemen’s 14 intercollegiate athletic programs, coordinates numerous community service activities throughout the academic year. This specific effort began with distribution of paper bags to all departments on campus. The student-athletes then collected, organized and packed the food for pick up by Food Bank representatives. The Thanksgiving and winter holiday seasons bring increased need and demand to the Food Bank and Daemen Athletics is proud to partner with them on this worthwhile project.

November 10, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

Hempstead, NY – With midterm examinations coming to an end, student-athletes from Hofstra University have been very active in the community, giving back to individuals, groups and organizations. During the week last week in October, student-athletes combined for more than 200 hours of service. Some of the highlighted projects included:

Long Island Children’s Museum Gala
On Saturday, October 25, student-athletes from women’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis dressed in their Hofstra uniforms and volunteered at the Annual Long Island Children’s Museum Gala. Student-athletes arrived early to help set-up for the event, as well as ran water stations and encouraged participants throughout the race.

CAA Blood Drive Challenge
On Tuesday, October 28, student-athletes, coaches and athletic department administrators took part in the 13th Annual CAA Blood Drive Challenge. This year’s event, run in partnership with the New York Blood Center and Hofstra University, collected 320 units, which will go towards saving more than 950 lives. Student-athletes volunteered to donate blood, as well as in a variety of other areas including registration, canteen and hosting a promotion table for two days prior to the event.

North Side Elementary Biography Day
On Wednesday, October 29, 24 student-athletes representing eight athletic teams at Hofstra took a visit to North Side Elementary School in Levittown, New York, to be interviewed by a class of fourth graders. Queens College Women’s Basketball Invites Children and Parents to Participate in Second Annual Holiday Hoops

November 10, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

Flushing, N.Y. – The Queens College women’s basketball team invites children ages 6-12 to participate in the second-annual, Holiday Hoops, taking place on Saturday, December 20, from 3:30 to 8:30.

The event is more for parents than kids, as parents are welcome to drop off their children at QC for a fun day of activities, while they can do their Christmas shopping undisturbed.

For the kids who participate, they will enjoy a college basketball game from the VIP section, take part in contests and halftime events, take a swim in the Queens College pool and enjoy a movie and some pizza with members of the basketball team. Children are encouraged to wear red for the game and to bring a chair, blanket or sleeping bag to make the movie more comfortable.

Last year’s Holiday Hoops was a big success and was lots of fun for the children. More importantly, it gave the parents some quality time to get holiday preparations done. This year’s event promises to be even better!
